Intro for the Rihanna Biography
Sure, her song "Umbrella" might have annoyed when you heard it for the 19th time. But you have to admit, the first few times you listened to it, you thought it was good. Rihanna had a monster hit on her hands with that song, but even though it was her first number one Billboard ranking, she was no stranger to making great pop music. She was voted #8 in the AskMen.com's Top 99 Women 2008 Edition.
The Biography of a Singing Sensation
After being discovered by a vacationing music producer in her home country of Barbados, Rihanna quickly got the attention of rapper Jay-Z, who signed her to DefJams Records. Her first album, Music of the Sun wasn't anything special, according to Rolling Stone magazine, which said the album was, "lacking of ingenuity and rhythm." But the album did contain the hit single "Pon de Replay," and perhaps because of this single, the record went platinum.
Her follow up album, A Girl Like Me, fared a bit a better with critics in 2006, and included the hit "SOS", which uses samples of Soft Cell's song, "Tainted Love." The song "SOS" was given an extra boost in airplay when Nike used the song in their ad campaign in 2006. The song spawned a sexy music video, featuring a belly-dancing Rihanna.
A year later, in 2007, Rihanna released her third album Good Girl Gone Bad, which featured the great/annoying song "Umbrella" and the new single "Shut up and Drive." Both songs became mainstays on MTV Hits and MTV 2, probably due in no small part to Rihanna's tight clothing, or in the case of "Umbrella", her lack of clothing.
Awards for Her Music
At a mere 20 years old, she has been nominated for and won numerous awards for her music. She, of course, dominates the Barbados Music awards, taking in eight awards in 2006, four in 2007, and six in 2008. In 2007, she walked away with the American Music Award for Favorite Female Artist and, in 2008, she took the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Other awards include Billboard Music Awards, Teen Choice Awards, and MTV Music Video Awards. She’s also appeared on many of the Sexiest Women Alive lists.
Cameos, Appearances, and Acting Parts
Since her rise to stardom, she has tested the waters in the world of acting, making cameo appearances in shows like Veronica Mars with Kristen Bell and movies like Bring It On: All or Nothing with Hayden Panettiere. Next up on the acting front is her feature film debut in the upcoming Mama Black Widow. She’s also a CoverGirl Spokesperson and her music has been used for Nike ads and The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show with those other beautiful ladies Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima.
Giving Back with Charity
Rihanna likes to spread a little love with her charity work. She’s done a number of concerts for The Believe Foundation, joined H&M for their Fashion Against AIDS campaign, and is the face of the 2008 Gucci UNICEF campaign.
Coming Up for the Singer
For those of you who miss her music, she is currently working on her fourth album, which will most likely be released in 2009.
