Introduction
The term supermodel gets thrown around a lot, but originally, when it meant something, it applied to five women: Linda Evangelista, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. Kate Moss would eventually join their ranks and they became known as "The Big 6".
Life Story
Naomi Campbell was born in London, England to a mother of Jamacian heritage and an unnamed father with a mixed background that includes Chinese. She attended the London Academy of Performing Arts and the Italia Conti Academy Stage school before she was discovered and offered a chance to model.
Career
Her first cover shoot was for Elle Magazine in 1986. In 1988 she was the first black model to appear on the cover of French Vogue. All told she has graced the cover of more than 500 magazines and has walked the catwalk for countless fashion giants like Gianni Versace, Ralph Lauren and Valentino. She has also posed nude for Playboy magazine and appeared in Madonna's 1992 book, Sex, in a set of photos with Madonna and rapper Big Daddy Kane.
She had a long and bitter fued with Tyra Banks but the two reconcilled on Banks' television show in 2005.
Other Work
Cambpell has worked as an actress, appearing in a dozen or so movies and television series, usually playing a model or some really hot babe. In 1994 she wrote a novel entitled Swan although she later admitted that the book was almost entirely ghost written because she didn't have the time to actually write it. Aside from modeling, she is best known for her appearances in music videos like Michael Jackson's "Keep it in the Closet" and George Michael's "Freedom! 90".
Temper Tantrums
Actually, take that back, aside from modeling she is probably best known for her temper tantrums and catty bitchiness. Examine, if you will, the evidence:
- In 2000, she pleaded guilty in a Toronto court to a 1998 assault on Georgina Galanis, her then assistant. Campbell assaulted Galanis with a telephone in a hotel room and threatened to throw her out of a moving car.
- March 2005: she was said to have slapped her new assistant, Amanda Brack, and beaten her around the head with a BlackBerry. Brack accused Campbell of assault, battery, false imprisonment, lesbian rape and infliction of emotional distress in incidents that started a month after she began working for her.
- Italian actress Yvonne Scio has claimed the model left her "covered in blood" after a spat at a Rome hotel.
Memorable Quote
Yvonne claimed: "She punched me in the face. She was like Mike Tyson."
- March 30, 2006: Campbell was arrested for allegedly assaulting her housekeeper with a jewel-encrusted mobile phone, resulting in a bloody head that required several stitches. She was charged with second degree assault.
