Introduction
Having 18 #1 singles, one more than Elvis Presley, Mariah Carey was the only artist to have a number 1 single in every year of the 1990s. World wide she has sold more than 180 million albums, making her the best selling female artist in history. Billboard Magazine named her Artist of The Decade while The World Music Awards named her Artist of The Millenium.
Life Story
Born in Huntington, Long Island, New York. Her mother was an opera singer and vocal coach of Irish descent, her father was an aeronautical engineer of African American and Venezuelan descent.
Her parents divorced when she was just 3 years old and she had very little contact with her father from that point on. She moved to New York City and enrolled in beauty school until she eventually landed work as a back up singer for Brenda K. Starr. She made a demo tape that found its way to record exec Tommy Mottola who was head of Sony at the time and the rest is history.
Career
Her first self titled album was released in 1990. It went to number 1, earned her two Grammy awards and is the highest selling female R&B debut ever. Her second album, Emotions was less successfull, peaking at #4 on the charts, but her third album, Music Box, was a huge hit. Mariah released DayDream which went straight to #1. The albums lead single "Fantasy" became the second single to debut at number one on Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Canadian Singles Chart for twelve weeks. "One Sweet Day" (a duet with Boyz II Men) spent a record-holding sixteen weeks at number one in the U.S., and "Always Be My Baby" was the most successful on U.S. radio in 1996, according to Billboard magazine. Carey's next album, Butterfly, yielded the number-one single "Honey". Carey stated that Butterfly marked the point that she attained full creative control over her music. "My All" (her thirteenth Hot 100 number-one) gave her the record for the most U.S. number-ones by a female artist. Rainbow, Carey's seventh studio album, was released in 1999. "Heartbreaker" and "Thank God I Found You" reached number one in the U.S., and the success of the former made Carey the only act to have a number-one single in each year of the 1990's with a total of fifteen. By 2001, she released the album Glitter to coincide with the movie of the same name. Although the album was considerably more successful than the film, the film was not so successful and album sales suffered, not only because of the film but also due to its release date of September 11, 2001, a tragic day in The United States. 2005 marked the release of her #1 comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi and her return to prominence. Going multi-platinum in numerous countries made The Emancipation of Mimi become the best selling album of 2005. The success of "We Belong Together" and "Don't Forget About Us' rewarded Carey her sixteenth and seventeenth number one singles. E=MC² is Mariah's eleventh studio album. It debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 with 463,000 copies sold, making it the biggest opening week sales of her career. Two weeks before the album's release, on April 2, 2008, "Touch My Body", her first single from the album, became Carey's eighteenth number-one single on the Hot 100, pushing her past Elvis Presley into second place for the most number-one singles among all artists in the rock era. Carey is now second only to The Beatles who have twenty number-one singles.
Acting and other Issues
Her foray into acting has not been well received. Critics had panned most of the work she had done and the public seemed to agree, as most of her acting projects had not done well financially or otherwise. The failure of her film Glitter may have played a part in her highly publicized emotional breakdown. Things started to change when Mariah, along with Mira Sorvino presented Wisegirls at the Sundance Festival and received a standing ovation. Mariah has also stared in The Bachelor alongside Chris O'Donell as one of his many ex-girlfriends. She is currently working on a new movie Tennesse where she plays a waitress that is struggling to make it big in country music. Not only does Mariah sing, act, produce and write songs but she also does endorsements. She wrote and sung many ringtones for Pepsi and Motorola and held a very popular Pepsi Smash concert that helped kick off her very successful The Adventures Of Mimi tour back in 2006. Being successful and highly talented is just a beginning to what Mariah is all about. She also did endorsements for Gillette razors and was honored Gillette - Legs of a Goddess.
Voice
Her famous voice spans an amazing five octave range, allowing her to hit everything from the lowest notes to glass shatering notes in the "whistle register", something only a handful of performers have ever been able to do. Some fans and musical historians claim she has the greatest vocal range of all time. Regardless, Mariah's range is considered nothing short of phenomenal and she has the chart domination to back it up.
