Introduction
Much like Michael Jordan, she’s known by one name. But unlike Jordan, she didn’t need Scottie Pippen to finally get over the hump. She started as a soloist and is still best known for her solo work. The singer-song writer’s electric blue eyes and sexy figure have enticed actors and athletes alike. Even her snaggletooth is somehow attractive.
Life Story
Jewel was born in Payson, Utah, in 1974 to Atz Kilcher and Lenedra Carroll. She spent most of her formative years in Alaska, living with her father. She learned to sing while still in elementary school, by performing at bars and taverns with her father, who apparently doesn’t abide by United States child labor laws.
After studying at a prestigious arts academy in Michigan, she moved to San Diego. She lived in her VW bug while performing at local coffee houses. Finally, in 1993, she was discovered during one of these coffee house performances, and shortly after signed a recording deal with Atlantic records for her first album, and her soul. The album was a huge success and sold over 12 million copies.
In 2003, in an attempt to reinvent herself, she released an album entitled 0304, apparently named in an attempt to correctly estimate how many people would purchase it. (Actually, this album was Jewel's highest charting and highest debuting album of her career, selling over 900,000 copies.) The album was unable to muster anywhere near the steam of her debut album, and consequently never regained the musical success that jump-started her career.
Still, the image of a slightly sweaty Jewel, sitting on a stool on a far too dramatically lit stage, is in image that has resonated with men everywhere. Though her music has seemed to not enjoy the success it once had, her “can’t put my finger on it” sexiness remains as strong as ever.
