Golden Brooks is best known for her character Maya Wilkes on the CW sitcom, Girlfriends. She has been featured in many films and television shows, and has appeared alongside actors such as Queen Latifah, Vivica A. Fox and Kevin Bacon.


Life Story

Born in San Francisco, Brooks was raised both there and in Los Angeles. At an early age, her mother encouraged Brooks to participate in a wide variety of endeavors, including gymnastics, ballet and theater, and the youngster soon found herself performing in numerous church plays, where she first learned to love appearing in front of an audience.


Brooks is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley with a Bachelor's Degree in Sociology and an emphasis on media representation of minorities. She also holds a Master's Degree from Sarah Lawrence College. She used her extensive training from Berkeley, where she also minored in theater, to capture roles in numerous high-profile feature films, including "Girl 6" directed by Spike Lee, "Timecode" directed by Mike Figgis and starring Holly Hunter, Salma Hayek and Jeanne Tripplehorn, "Hell's Kitchen" and "Imposter," in which she appeared opposite Gary Sinise and Vincent D'Onofrio in a story by Philip K. Dick.


Brooks has an impressive list of television credits which includes her series regular role on Showtime's Linc's, as well as guest-starring roles on The Jamie Foxx Show for The WB, The Parkers for UPN, Adventures of Pete and Pete for Nickelodeon and Promised Land for CBS.


A dedicated volunteer, Brooks has worked with inner city youths to help improve their performances in school through English, poetry and empowerment training. She is also very active in sports and enjoys horseback riding, ice-skating and gymnastics. Brooks resides in Los Angeles with her cat, Saeku.
