Life Story
With a voice that you either hate or find mildly amusing, Fran Drescher became the new queen of sit-coms in 1993 with her show The Nanny. But before her breakout role, Drescher had already established herself as a comedic actress appearing in films such as This Is Spinal Tap and the cult hit UHF. Her first film role was in the blockbuster hit Saturday Night Fever.
Drescher pitched the idea of the Nanny to CBS president Jeff Sagansky when she ran into him on a flight to Paris. The impromptu meeting worked, and the Nanny aired in 1993 and earned Drescher two Emmy Award nominations in 1996 and 1997.
Things have not always worked out well for Drescher. In 1985, her home was invaded and she was sexually attacked at gunpoint. Drescher would later tell Larry King that the ordeal was horrible, but she was able to deal with it saying, "My whole life has been about changing negatives into positives."
In 2000, Dresher was diagnosed with stage 1 Uterine cancer, but was fortunate enough to make a full recovery. In 2007, Dresher launched Cancer Schmancer, a non-profit organization aimed at teacher people the importance of early detection. Fran has taken a break from acting to focus on the new foundation.
