Uma Thurman is a tall, uniquely beautiful creature who serves as the heroine of more than 30 films, the ex-husband of two well-known actors and the muse of Quentin Tarantino.
Life Story
The daughter of a German fashion model and a Buddhist studies professor—Uma’s dad, Robert Thurman, was the first westerner to be ordained a Tibetan monk—Uma grew up an awkward and introverted girl, often teased about her name, her height, the size of her feet and her angular bone structure. Of course, those same features made her a perfect candidate for the world of high fashion, and at 16 she signed with a modeling agency and began appearing in magazines like Glamour and Vogue.
Having taken acting lessons and performed in boarding-school productions, Uma made her film debut in 1988 with four—yes, four—movies: the underrated high school sports flick Johnny Be Good (Jennifer Tilly), the thriller Kiss Daddy Goodnight, Terry Gilliam’s The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (in which she briefly appears nude as Venus), and Dangerous Liaisons (Michelle Pfeiffer).
Other Uma offerings have included the NC-17-rated Henry & June, Ted Demme’s Beautiful Girls (Lauren Holly, Natalie Portman, Mira Sorvino), the big-budget flops Batman & Robin (Alicia Silverstone, Vivica A. Fox, Elle Macpherson) and The Avengers, and Gattaca, where she met future ex-husband Ethan Hawke.
